Bet Tikvah Synagogue was founded as an off-shoot of the North London Progressive Synagogue. In its early days, a small group of committed families began holding services in the chapel at Barnardo’s headquarters in Tanners Lane, Barkingside. In 1981, we were lucky enough to find and purchase our own building in what had once been a Victorian primary school. The building had been neglected and was in poor condition but, over the next few years, it was lovingly transformed into a place of worship, mostly by the enthusiastic efforts of our founding members.
Recently, we have been refurbishing the original work and improving the facilities in the building. The Prayer Hall has been revitalised with a beautiful, new, purpose built Ark.
The kitchen area now boasts a modern kitchen complete with range cooker.
The Functions Hall has been redecorated.
The refurbished foyer now contains a wall display which was originally a set of Ark doors that were inherited on permanent loan from the now closed North London Progressive Synagogue.
The community is led by an elected Council. The synagogue Chair is appointed at the AGM from amongst the Council membership and serves for a maximum period of three years.
